Favourite books of 2018

16 January 2019

After finishing the year on a grand total of 53 books, narrowing it down to my top 10 (actually 11 because I couldn't decide) was extremely difficult. Pretty much all the books I read this year were crime/thrillers because that's my all-time favourite genre. I do love a good murder.

This is going to be a quick little intro into my faves from this year. I've linked all the full reviews next to them if you want some more info.

Final Girls by Riley Sager - Full Review - This was probably one of the most hyped thrillers and I have to say I loved it. Think Scream vibes. I spent the whole book desperate to know what had happened that night.

Special Girls by Isabelle Grey - Full Review - When a doctor is murdered at a summer camp for girls with eating disorders a question is raised over a potential history of child abuse. Isabelle Grey dealt with the sensitive topics really well with a heartbreaking and gripping read.

Exhume by Danielle Girard - Full Review - I'm a huge fan of books that are based on forensic science and pathology. This series follows a Dr who has escaped an abusive marriage but it comes back to haunt her in the worst way. Great psychological thriller.

The Night Bird by Brian Freeman - Full Review - Psychological thrillers featured heavily in my 2018. In the Night Bird people are being killed by their worst fears. The murders in this book were so different and horrendously terrifying.

Don't Wake Up by Liz Lawler - Full Review - Another psychological thriller and it's a good one. Waking up tied to an operating table and forced to make a terrible decision. Then waking up in a hospital room unharmed minus a bump to the head. No one believes you and you soon start to question yourself. Such a great read that makes you question everything and everyone.

Vanishing Girls by Lisa Regan - Full Review - The Detective Josie Quinn series may be my all time favourite from 2018. I read them all and I need more asap. My dad is also hooked on them and he never reads. Loveable detective, dramatic personal life and gritty murders. This first book is such an explosive start to a series and the momentum keeps up for all 4 books.

The Trophy Taker by Sarah Flint - Full Review - Another series I discovered is the DC Charlie Stafford series. This is the second book which I think may be my favourite, but the whole series is incredible. There are so many loveable characters mixed in with gruesome murders that keep you hooked.

Truth & Lies by Caroline Mitchell* - Full Review - Finding out as an adult that you are adopted is one thing, but finding out that your biological parents are a serial killer duo is a whole other ballgame. Add this to the fact that you only found out because your "mother" is willing to release the locations of 3 bodies if you play along with her sick game, then you get a great book.

Down to the Woods by M.J Arlidge* - Full Review - I absolutely adore the Helen Grace series and this instalment did not let me down. As usual, it's a fast-paced hunt to find the killer with Helen & Charlie getting into trouble and taking risks.

The Good Daughter by Karin Slaughter - Full Review - Karin Slaughter is the author that got me hooked on the crime genre and I have loved her work ever since. The Good Daughter is honestly such an incredible read and utterly heartbreaking. I mean I cried at the first chapter and many others along the way.

The Hangman's Hold by Michael Wood* - Full Review - I started this series in the wrong order as per usual but I am definitely hooked. I went back and read the first 2 and have the 3rd one ready to go. DC Matilda Darke has a devastating personal life and an amazing team to help her. Things get personal when she is targeted by the killer. It's such a fast-paced read that I couldn't put it down

If you had to choose, what was your favourite book in 2018?
